The Fine Art Trade Guild has elected a new master: artist and Crabfish founder Colin Ruffell. This is the first time in its history, which spans almost 100 years, that the Fine Art Trade Guild has elected an artist to head up the organisation and the company feels that it will help the association to get a better understanding of its artist members.

The position of master within the Fine Art Trade Guild is a leadership role, similar to that of a chairman, which is elected by Fine Art Trade Guild members. Ruffell has been serving on the executive board of the association for two years as Members’ Warden after several years on the Court as a director and Chair of committees. He will hold office for two years and is taking over the position from Designlines Systems boss Peter Hayton.

Ruffell said: “It is quite thrilling to work with the great staff team at Guild HQ in London, at this pivotal time when our fine art industry is going through a period of interesting business opportunities and exciting technological developments.

“The Fine Art Trade Guild has been the main forum for my own success and recognition as an artist, providing expert advice and networking, as well as the many benefits that established organisations can provide for members.” press report

One of the naive kitchen paintings by Colin Ruffell

" About 25 years ago I bought an original "Naïve" kitchen painting.  It is a picture that we have treasured greatly ever since the day you came round to our house and sold it to us..... we do appreciate art, both painted and music, ... and are always on the look out, although I think I can say without any doubts, that we would not find anything which we would appreciate as much as yours."       R Claridge, Kent.

"By far our most successful contemporary exhibitor. Colin Ruffell's work has travelled the world after being purchased at our Canary Wharf gallery." Reginald Beer, JP. Proprietor. Frontispiece Gallery.

London Daybreak by Colin Ruffell, in the series of paintings prints and images of London.

'London Daybreak' by Colin Ruffell

Colin Ruffell paints in many styles. Some images are childlike and amusing, others are traditional landscapes, and yet more are complex modernist abstract relationships of colour, texture and shape. He claims that he paints in explosive bursts, necessarily punctuated by long spells of getting ready, or recovery from the last effort.

Kite Flyer by Fran Slade, one of a series showing fanatsy images paintiongs and prints with topiary gardens.

'Kite Flyer' by Fran Slade

Fran Slade paints pictures which harness mystical symbolism, and fantasy. She is fully trained, yet she paints as a naïve. Her work looks simple, yet it provokes complex sub-conscious feeling. She cannot explain her imagery, it comes from deep within.

"Painting is a strange business". J. M. W. Turner

"Art is music on paper" Ronnie Wood [Rolling Stones] quoted in Artists & Illustrators Magazine September 2007

"I liked the way Colin Ruffell's book was written frequently sprinkled with humour throughout each chapter.  He is a natural at how to market yourself as an artist.  He is living proof of how to be a success as an artist.  So many people say it can't be done.  I admire what he has to say and recommend his book as a valuable tool to helping you on your way." Angela Mackay
