"From Colin
Ruffell at crabfish.com
Our newsletter is called SCRIBBLEDOODLE and we will send you 'scribbledoodles'.
Watch out for the word 'scribbledoodle' in your subject box for future emails from us.
A brief explanation is called for;
'scribble' refers to the writing bit of the message, and 'doodle' indicates that there will be a visual bit as well.
So in this first scribbledoodle you are introduced to who we are.
OK, you might already know this, but then again you might not, so here goes.
We are Daddy Artist, Mummy Artist, and Daughter Artist.
AKA Colin Ruffell, Fran Slade [Ruffell], and Shyama Ruffell.
This crabfish thing is a family business. The name 'crabfish' is derived from
the zodiac birthday signs of Colin [cancer the CRAB] and Fran [pisces the FISH].
Colin and Fran met at Hornsey Art College in London, and married soon after. Shyama was born in the following year also in London.
We have been very happily surviving as artists ever since then,
eating our bowls of porridge etc.
We paint pictures, make prints, write words, and then try to sell
them.
When she was just three or four Shyama showed promise of her precocious talents by making a small drawing of the family group standing in
front of the house that we lived in at that time.
Years later Colin demonstrated his precocious skill by copying her brilliant idea and
making a huge doodle based on Shyama's doodle.
This big painting became the centre piece of his exhibition when he took part in a show called Nine Plus in Chelsea Town Hall London in
1973.
So here is the link to the 'doodle' that goes with this 'scribble'.

As you see in those days Colin had green hair, which luckily has now fallen out.
The original little
doodle by Shyama is here;

And here is a recent
photograph to show how well we have weathered over the last 40 odd years.
As you can see it is mainly the hair colouring.

So that's us.
Welcome to the scribbledoodle club.
If you are already a collector of work by Colin Ruffell, Fran Slade or Shyama Ruffell, then you will know that we are committed to
making our artwork to the highest quality and strict standards of The Fine Art Trade Guild.
But that is the subject of another story, so watch your inbox for a future article about The Fine Art Trade Guild.
Future messages will cover a wide range of subjects that should interest;
- artists,
- photographers,
- collectors,
- dealers,
- the press,
- wealthy and generous art patrons.
Hmmm? OK that last category is a trifle optimistic.
We would be very grateful for your feedback on our work, and welcome any suggestions or questions that you might have.
Our website is http://www.crabfish.com
Thanks again for your interest.
Cheers
Colin
